Assuming it's a foul, at what distance is it okay to anticipate a goalkeeper releasing then? 3 yards you say no, 5?, 10?

OR

It's not a foul, because sticking your leg out 3 yards from an opponent is not challenging them or preventing them from doing anything. It's preventing an outcome, but not a release.
You keep saying 3 yards which is not quite accurate (see images in post #84) but that's not the point. So if sticking your leg out in front of the ball when the keeper is in the process of releasing it is not challenging or preventing to release the ball then what distance is? 2 yards? 1 yard? Half a yard? how about a few inches?

Right, Karius decided to throw the ball to his right back as soon as he took control of it. In a free kick situation when the kicker decides to play it quickly we're not bothered that the attacker's not the required distance. So, the keeper's thrown it quickly, the attacker's stuck his foot out (in a non dangerous movement) and the ball struck the attacker's foot then ended up in the goal. Let's stop trying to blame the officials for this; the goalkeeper f***ed up, it's a goal.
Your description of a QFK is not quite right. See this post:
Great analogy.

And here is the refchat debate for it. Just about everyone was happy with a yellow card.

Wrong.

Karius still had ‘control’ of the ball when Benzema stuck his foot in the way of the intended release.....thereby attempting to prevent the gk releasing the ball....thus its an offence and no goal.

Although very difficult to pick up in real time.....
Sorry, we agree occasionally but not on that post, that’s really stretching a control argument to the last degree. He’s in perfect control, it’s a bad throw out, read by an opponent, not one pundit or anyone important has said LFC were robbed, More than a billion people watched it too, no teeshirts yet looking for 'Justice for Karius', goal, move on to his next rick!

This is true. And the Kloppmeister is gracious in defeat.

Interesting that, in real time, there were three key moments in the game: Salah's awkward fall, Karius' first mistake, Bale's goal of the decade.
And now, on video, there are three key moments in the game: Ramos' judo move and arm lock on Salah, Ramos' elbow to Karius' head off the ball, Benzema's foul for the first goal.

What would VAR have done differently in this game?
- Would VAR ask for a YC/RC for Ramos' Salah challenge?
- After that there are a lot of ifs, but presumably VAR spots the elbow and orders RC and taxi for Ramos?
- And does VAR chalk off Benzema's goal?

I don't want VAR as said before. Are 2-3 out of these 3 obvious KMIs for review? ...the elbow and goal certainly would have got reviewed I think - but the Salah challenge would have been very hard to choose to review. Would the outcome have been different, is this a vote for VAR, would all VARs be able to agree on the Benzema goal...?

Really, you're going with that example? In a quick free kick situation, I'm disallowing this 100% of the time, due to the fact that a player within 10 yards has made a deliberate move towards the ball.

Yep. He's moved towards the ball before it was released - the free kick equivalent is moving to block the ball before the kick. The ball wasn't kicked directly at him - he had to take a quick step or two then stretch his leg out.
