This came up in a group I’m in, and thought it may be a good discussion topic

IDFK is given just outside penalty area. Attacker decides to have a shot and it is on target to go into the goal. Defender decides to stick his arm out and prevents the ball from going in.

Decision?

(Think this originated on a site somewhere)

Penalty and YC for me. Unless, of course, it hits another body part first, in which case RC.

More amusing would be if the handball failed to stop the ball going into the goal and actually led to a goal being scored 😊

Understand the answer, but a caution does feel a little harsh. They've turned a certain goal kick into a penalty, that feels like punishment enough.

I think unsporting behaviour makes sense. The player did not know that they were stopping a goal kick. Their behaviour was unsporting because in their mind and their action they were trying to, unfairly, stop a goal.
That's how I see the interpretation.
I guess if it wasn't deliberate i.e. a non-deliberate handball offence, then no caution would be appropriate.

Exactly my feeling on it!

I was going to say that they should know a goal can't be scored from an IDFK, but then I realised we are talking about footballers. I once had a player ask me if my arm being in the air meant he could take the free kick once I lowered it, to which I replied we'll be here a long time if that was the case mate 🤷‍♂️

I do understand why it should be a caution, just feels a bit harsh and unnecessary. Same as when a player tries to keep a shot out of the goal and fails: they've given away a penalty, everyone is laughing at them for trying to cheat and failing, and they get a yellow card to top it all off.

I remember a certain player attempting to punch the ball out of the goal at the end of a 7-2 drubbing for the team I support many years ago and I remember saying 'you're so sh*t you can't even cheat to stop them scoring'.
Then that player went on to become our captain and a bit of a hero to be fair.
Then he got old and I've now refereed him a few times for step 2, 3 and 4 clubs, and I'm back to thinking he's a bit of a knob. 😆
