Euro 2024: Uefa wants only captains to speak to referees

Uefa tells teams at Euro 2024 that only captains will be allowed to approach referees to speak about decisions during games.

Uefa has told teams at Euro 2024 that only captains will be allowed to approach referees to speak about decisions taken during games and other players doing so risk being booked.

The move by European football's governing body is to try to stop groups of players "mobbing" referees in scenes which are "bad for the image of football".

Are they really doing anything new. Any player protesting to the referee already risks being booked. Sigh. I'm afraid I feel this is yet another short term campaign just to appear they are doing something about it..

Any signal with palms facing out was discouraged at our recent Level3/4 Development Roadshow
I personally agree with that guidance from the FA
Not entirely sure what a good signal would be however
 
The other interesting element is that in theory even if the whole team entered the zone together, it's possible that only one gets cautioned for it.
 
As well as all the above valid concerns, I'm also wary of anything that gives captains too much legitimacy. McGinn was giving Hooper an earful all game last night, but Hooper seemed reluctant to book him in part because of the armband - it needs to be reiterated that captains don't get complete free reign.
 
Don't disagree with the principle, but introducing it at the finals of a huge tournament isn't the right time or place. It potentially adversely affects the teams that play first, they pick up loads of cautions but the teams playing later in the same group stage don't because they have seen what happened, or UEFA tell the referees to wind it back in a bit.

Also, I seem to remember it saying somewhere these IFAB trials could only be used at or below national domestic third tiers. The Euros, last time I checked, was just a bit higher than that! Obviously UEFA like to take things into their own hands though!

Yes, that is in the protocol I linked above. Can't be used in top tier or international 'A' competition matches.

That was it, I just didn't bother to re-read the protocol! Shows why I should always check sources first 😂
 
I think I just do a 'breast stroke' type action when players consider surrounding.
Then make an obvious action to be approachable by one player, saying something like one's OK, two's too many, three's a crowd
I finish by disembowelling the unwitting one as if out there on the savannah.

I keep a blow pipe in my red card pocket and pick off any stragglers with darts. (Also useful for any strays trying to avoid handshakes at full time).

I'm just not enthused by this idea in general
I can't really remember the last time I felt genuinely crowded... yet I've made decisions which ain't gone down too well
I think there's common theme between members that we already have the necessary sanctions available to us. If they used these tools properly on TV, it would oil our wheels to follow suit. It all has the feel if 'window dressing'. We still won't see 2nd yellows, which is all the players care about really. All this complexity muddles up our observations and club marks. Just don't stand for pelters and don't dodge C7s. Stepped Approach, The 3xP's, get rid of Sin Bins, don't bother with crossed arms and palms in player's faces and most importantly... 'don't let the buggers (participants) run the show'
