I always have a clean kit and boots in my car. You never know when they may be needed. A couple of years back I went to watch a friend who referee in a Leicestershire Senior League game. One of his assistants called him 30 minutes before kick off saying he had broke down and would not be able to...
I would advise never to be concerned about your marks, whether from assessor so or clubs. Go out there and just referee to the best of your ability. Any problems will be highlighted by assessors. I have known too many referees who have been concerned about their marks, and they end up trying to...
I think if we are honest with ourselves we will know whether we have had a good game. The amount of cards shown is irrelevant. Always control the game with honesty and integrity, and take action when it is needed.
It is something I have always done, and will continue to do. By making sure the goalkeepers are ready it alerts everyone else that kickoff is imminent.
It is easy to get caught up in the welfare of the injured player. What I tend to do is go straight over to the offender, get his number and make him aware that you will be dealing with him shortly. Then go and see if the injured player requires treatment. All this only takes a few seconds, and...
In my game yesterday I awarded a free kick to the away team about 30 yards from goal. The goalkeeper came running out of his penalty area to remonstrate with me. As he did so a player asked meif he could take the free kick quickly, which I of course allowed him to do. He then chipped the ball...
A similar incident happened in yesterdays game between Millwall and Wolves. Wolves made a substitution before a corner kick was taken. The referee allows the game to re-start before the Wolves defender is in position. Millwall score, and protests galore from Wolves. Always allow substitutes to...
There was once a team in the Hinckley Sunday League comprising of mostly prison officers. They were called Glen Parva FC, and played their home games at Glen Parva young offenders prison. As referee you were searched before being escorted through to the changing rooms. Visiting teams were also...
My advice is never let anyone try to dictate how you will referee the game, and of course every game is different and can throw up new situations. Judge everything on its merit.
You were fortunate that this did not cause a mass confrontation, though it seems you handled this one well. I had a terrible tackle in a game a couple of weeks ago. Two footed and over the ball. I went over to assess the extent of the players injury, which was thankfully not too bad, but I...
Awarding the goal is the correct decision. A referee cannot stop the game in those situations. As a matter of interest how badly was the keeper injured?
I used to be level four and did MFA , Midland Combination and contributory line. But since my injuries, I just do district league and Hinckley Sunday League.
Should the referee toss the coin to decide which end a penalty shoot out will take place, or should he inform both captains which end they will be taken from?
Once you become a referee you will never watch a game in the same light again. Whether it is in the premier league or on the park on a Sunday morning, you will be constantly watching the referee. And if people around you know that you are a referee, they will soon be asking you about the...
