Falling out of love of refereeing

People above have spoken about having a word with the teams etc… To be honest I don’t think that’s useful advice and doesn’t make you enjoy your games more. If you’re feeling the way you are, the best thing to do is take some time off or do fewer games. I always do the same when I’m going...

    Refereeing Decisions Explained

Oh totally, I don’t disagree with you there. But if you want to improve public perception of VAR, then phrases like that don’t help

Referee Tone (e.g. Brooks @ Newcastle - VVD DOGSO)

Yeah I thought his tone was needlessly aggressive, I’m not sure if it’s trying to come across as ‘strong’ but to me it just adds fuel to the fire and stood out like a sore thumb when I first saw the clip. He does pre-warn him though with a ‘if it’s not offside, you’ve got to go immediately’...

    Refereeing Decisions Explained

Seeing some criticism on social media of Taylor asking Gillett to ‘tell me what I’m going to be seeing when I get to the screen’ as he runs over to the monitor after an on-field review has been initiated. Fair point I think as it makes it come across like the VAR has already decided and simply...

    Cautioning an injured player

If it’s reckless, it’s reckless - and the player should be cautioned, regardless of whether or not they’re injured. Typical protocol from what I know seems to be to wait until they’re stood up. If they’re being helped up by physios etc, show it then as they get up. I’ve seen refs show a card...

    Sub before penalty?

During a game? Absolutely, as long as the referee is informed and the team still has substitutes available etc Before penalty kicks to determine the outcome of a match? Not usually, unless it’s a keeper who is unable to continue and the team still has a substitution available.

    Deaf Official

Totally this - I’m deaf in my left ear so I’ve got no surround sound and can’t tell which direction sounds are coming from. So if I can identify exactly where dissent / OFFINABUS is coming from, you can be pretty certain it’s worth a sanction

    Apologise to Club

I’m not sure I would, to be honest. I don’t see what good admitting you were at fault does, other than potentially wind the club up that they should have been playing vs 10 men and making you feel a bit better about yourself. One of those where you learn from it, move on, and focus up on the...

Open Age Caution procedure and write on cards

Presuming this isn't relevant, then, for any of us operating at grassroots / below Step 6? They still want us to go through the full process?

    Spot Kick Spin

Yeah this is bad awareness from the ref, lucky that the AR is alert. A reminder for us all to stay alert in situations like this, no matter what!

    Refereeing in a Cast

Would you allow a player to play with a cast? No, so don’t do it yourself. You really should try to minimise movement of the arm to allow the bone to heal properly (which would make it difficult to signal). You’re also in for problems if you get hit by the ball / slip and fall over. As...

    Twitter post/rant

The only difficulty with that - especially at grassroots - is it would rely on the game details like venue, KO time being unchanged. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve had matches update, even just slightly, which would cause frustration to observers if there was no way of communicating...

How on earth do you manage that many games a season?! Congratulations.

    Wolves v Crystal Palace

Initial reaction was red, on replay I can see an argument where I’d just about be happy with yellow. Lunges in, out of control, the only mitigating factor is the force and point of contact means I’m not convinced it was excessive force.

    Hearing aids

Yeah, it’s probably what I struggle with the most! Some captains are more helpful than others but it’s definitely made things much easier for me I’ve found!

    Hearing aids

I’m deaf in my left ear so have no surround sound and I do think I probably miss the odd bit of dissent here and there because I just don’t physically hear it or can’t identify which player it’s come from. The flip side of that is if I can tell, I can be pretty sure it’s worthy of a sanction...

    ARS v CIT

Even as a City fan, that’s a penalty. You never see them given, but they should be. Well done Taylor on a great half tbh

Manchester City vs. Manchester United - Offside or Not?

Onside as per the laws. Should be offside though.

    Leeds vs Man City

If this were grassroots I’d have been angling for a team PI for the constant fouls on Grealish, and probably one for Rodri too for PI. I never feel that confident watching Atwell, he never seems that sure of his decisions. Think he plays bizarre ‘advantages’ in the defensive third as well
