What are the fitness tests in England and Scotland and are they different?

Want to get fit enough that I can pass them next year when I go for it.

What level are you "going for it" for? There is no fitness test up to level 5. 5-4 candidates have to run a continuous 12 minutes covering a minimum distance 2600m followed by 2 50 metre sprints in 7.5s maximum. L3 2700m cooper test as above. Not sure after that

That’s not strictly true, I think it is County dependant.

Here in Somerset there are fitness tests for all levels: 2000m in 12 min L7 to 6, 2200m in 12 min L6 to 5 (I need to double check those figures, please don’t quote me on them) plus the 2x 50m sprints in 7.5 s for all levels.

Somerset FA has introduced these fitness tests to help those on the pathway to L4, so they get the experience, and develop the training habits, of the fitness test at all stages of the process, rather than suddenly meeting it as you go for L4.

A good idea in my opinion

I wasnt aware that was the case in other counties.
Fair enough. 👍

Isn't that if you are going for promotion or want county cup games? Otherwise what happens to the journeymen 70 year old referees who aren't very mobile but serve a purpose and get games covered?

Apologies - perhaps I wasn’t as clear as I might have been.

I was just talking about those going for promotion. Where I talk of “2000m in 12 mins L7 to 6” I meant that that is the criteria for those going from L7 to L 6.

The 70 year old journeyman can continue untested!

I ran 2.9K in 12 mins when training for a half marathon 8 years ago
3 stone heavier now, so those days are history. Lifestyle has rendered me miles off that now

Always also bear in mind, as much as a degree of fitness plays its part, passing the fitness test merely shows you can do just that, pass a fitness test
it really gives no indication of your fitness

I got given a sprint coach for a month because the boss thought I was going to fail a 60m at some point, I was always in 5.8, 5.9, not once did I ever have a resit.
The 75 m runs.... if I was never first at ever run, I was certainly second.

This for our state league referees (tier 2 to tier 5 in national scheme). I'm doing mine tomorrow. Everyone does the sprints and interval runs. CODA is for AR specialists (tier 2) only.

I really like the CODA test. I did it for the first time in October at got under 9 secs 8.96, and was chuffed with that. (fanfare)
The 40m I practice a bit and my quickest in the fitness test last year was 5.11. I really really want to go under 5 (it's coming in May) as I think it would be a bit of an achievement. Meaningless in the greater scheme of things, still not enough to keep up with Sadio, but I am 45 ;)
Cooper test (12) mins I have done 2850 3 years in a row. Not my favourite. I think I worked out I just have to like er... run faster... but... argh. Respect to anyone going over 3k.

The "new" 10 laps 75/25 run/walk I haven't tried yet. Very interested in how hard it gets after 20 or so (15 secs for 75m, @20 secs rest).

For our higher divs (not highest) I think we will have both the FIFA 75/25 and the classic YoYo IR test this year, which is frankly horrible and really does separate the able youth from well, me..! The old (?) 18.1 target for the YoYo for top level refs is seriously heavy duty. 16.1 is my official mark (at 43, so biscuit please). Have done the ARIET YoYo last year (with crabbing and straight running) and yeah, love the idea of it, but also torture!

I don't want to say it is 'easy', but the difficulty is in the constant stop/starting. Timing-wise it wasn't that bad. I did the lowest level of it though, so don't mind me! :p
