The commentators on the game were also completely unaware that the teams don't get a choice of ends and rather it is just done by the referee tossing a coin. It doesn't surprise me, but if I showed that lack of knowledge about the area I work in I'd probably struggle to keep my job. And I'm not just blaming Jon Champion and Alan Shearer, they have studio pundits and a small army of producers and researchers and seemingly none of them got in their ear to correct it.

Yes, but the commentators then completely ignored that and talked about the teams choosing which end the penalties would be taken at.

The 'Refereeing Community' is complicit when it comes to the rest of the 'Footballing Community' not knowing the rules
I don't know if the two groups were ever wedded to any extent. I'm sure there was once a degree of respect between the two parties
However, we're utterly divorced these days and both sides are to blame. There is no respect left. Besides, I'm not sure the rules can be clearly understood by referees, let alone pundits. Even when the rules are understood, they're selectively applied on an inconsistent basis
It doesn't matter though, everyone keeps tuning in to watch and the commercial juggernaut keeps getting bigger. The profile of Match Officials is continually more conspicuous as we detract from the game with VAR and raised public profile and we're derided more than ever to the extent that the football community doesn't care about the rules because of their perceived amateurism of us.
The rules are not worth learning because they're opaque and amateurish in nature. The rules are not respected enough to bother with

Seems all in line with the lotg. It doesn't say the referee's decision has to based on the result of the coin toss.
I think it's pretty clear from watching that at least some of the confusion was caused by the PSG captain specifically pointing at his preferred end after the first toss. Whether he misunderstood and thought he had won the toss and was choosing, was just confirming what the ref had said, or the ref actually did allow him to choose is unclear, but it certainly looked like enough like he was making a decision that I understand some confusion.
Equally though, they had a mic on what the referee was saying and he clearly said 'green, that end, blue, that end' (Pointing to the relevant ends).
May not have been blue, but I remember green being one of them
Fair enough, I don't particularly recall being able to clearly hear what he was saying, and the PSG captain's actions were confusing as well though, so I maintain that it was at least somewhat unclear. Doesn't change the fact commentators should know how it's supposed to work mind.
I thought he was just indicating to the PSG fans that the kicks would be at their end.
