A really unusual one at a Step 7 (Supply) match yesterday.

Home team in white shirts, black shirts and socks. Away team - light blue and while strips, navy shorts and socks so no clash.

Half time - Home team changes to Red shirts, never asking permission from Ref and the shirt numbers were not the same as the original team sheet.

Do you allow?

PS I recall Man I changed at Soton a number of years ago, but the shirt number were the same and the referee was asked.

The Ref Stop
League report required. No requirement in law to remain in the same kit.

I would agree if the numbers on the new kit were the same as the old one. If they weren't that potentially causes problems, not just with the match officials but also the paying spectators who may have been given a team sheet.

This is when you need to know your competition rules.
Though even if the rules say the shirt change is not permitted, if they have a reason and the other team is okay with it then let it be. The numbers are the bigger issue. Especially in Australia where we only use numbers and teamsheets - don't ask for player names at the time of booking.
So that would probably be the road block there. If it's a whole different set of numbers then this can be updated on the sheet but alterations probably aren't allowed after the game starts. Though if it's low grade and the other team are fine with it....

Realistically it would be a part of comp rules hardly anyone would know or remember. A bit of common sense should prevail, give me a list of all players, their old number and new number (team sheet supplement) and let's get in with the game.

Problem is though, do something that the comp rules don't agree with and you open the match result up to appeal. This is why I always carried the comp rules in my bag or had them save on my phone.

I see what you're saying but surely no result would be overturned for changing kit?

Well, if 1-16 are on the teamsheet, and 30-45 took the field, then they've arguable fielded players not on the teamsheet.

Changing kit, i can't imagine why that would lead to an appeal of the match result...yeah, may breach comp rules, but doesn't affect the game. The numbers could be.

Even if they provided an updated list of numbers, it still leads to the players on the field not matching the teamsheet. I imagine different FA's may take it different.

Having a conversation with the offending team and the opposition to make sure nobody has their nose out of joint should help to cover yourself.

I'd require a numbers update obviously, but I can't imagine any result would be changed because of a change of kit. They must have done it for a reason ie colour clash. Who wants to wash 2 kids without good reason!

So if their is no actual requirement in Law then why are some of you reporting, reporting what exactly? 🤔

So how many referees check every player's number against the teamsheet to see if they are wearing the right number before KO? In fact how many check some sort of photo ID to check the player on the field is who they say it is on the team sheet?
The fact of the matter is once they have given you a 'binding' document (or even verbal) you take their word for it and if it turns out to be incorrect then you report it.
Often just before KO I get told that player so and so is recorded as X on team sheet but is wearing Y because he forgot his jersey. I thanks them for it, record it on my game card and get on with the game. I only report it if a matter arises from it. The league has the least of interest in getting such trivial report (there will be hundred of them in grassroots). I can tell this for a fact and from experience.

Agreed. As a referee, surely all you want is to be told of any changes that have arised, whether it be kit, names/numbers etc. It is not reasonable to expect the referee to cross check player information prior to the match and I'm not sure it's expected. Surely once you have received the team sheets that's your job done? On with the game

Don’t the Laws trump the rules??
only in cases where they contradict. In this case case there is no contradiction so comp rules still apply.
For example, LOTG says nothing about fences around the field. That means they can be there or not be there. They are mandatory in one of the leagues I referee in so if they are not there, a report goes in.
Another example is stadium capacity or security in the big boys leagues.

Don’t the Laws trump the rules??? Surely if there is no law breach then any sub rule is completely irrelevant???
Not really, unless there is a conflict.
Also changes who you report to. If a breach of lotg this is a discipline issue dealt with by county/FA.
Breach of competition rules is reported to the league/cup secretary.
There are also references to competition rules in lotg
