Had previously rated this ref highly...not anymore, he's had an indifferent 25 mins and this pen decision is a shocker

VAR bailing him out...no clue why its taken them fully 4 mins to figure it out. Appalling process

Yep. Way too slow !

I can't believe VAR got involved with the first penalty.

The second one, am I correct in thinking it was ruled out for offside?

There appeared to be some confusion. The commentators were saying it wasn't ruled out for offside while at the same time, the on-screen graphic was saying it was.

Haven’t actually seen it properly, but surely if it was offside then the referee wouldn’t have gone to screen (unless subjective)?

I didn't see restart, so I can't comment on that.
I saw the lead up to ref going to monitor, then reports saying no penalty.

So I am speculating as to what happened.

The fact that he started with a dropped ball, based on what others are saying, I'm assuming the "foul" happened before offside offence meaning by overturning it, it is a dropped ball. So he went to the monitor for the foul and not offside as per what others have said (and the screen). But he could have gone to the screen for the offside to determine himself what order it was as the outcome/restart varies for each.

Foul first (given)/offside = pen
Foul first (not given)/offside = dropped ball
Offside first/foul (doesn't matter if foul or not) = IFK.

Game must restart correctly and it falls on the onfield referee to get it right.
Getting it wrong could be bad for officials their credibility and by sending official to screen for any of these scenarios is best outcome.

First penalty i was shocked VAR got involved.
Second one was a clear dive and I’m
Shocked it took so long to get the ref over to monitor.

Ever found yourself in a situation where the pressure gets to you?

Where no matter what you do, it gets worse and everything goes wrong and you just can’t recover it?

Now imagine that in front of thousands of people and TV cameras.

That’s what’s happened here. He’ll be all the better for it once he’s cleared his head.
